On sunday, my computer got stuck in a loop of infinite restarts. Now, after a lot of screwing with UBCD, I managed to fix the registry. It works now, but I have no idea why it packed up at first.

One question... Why not use Linux? I use only Linux and have little or no need for Windows applications. If I wanted to play a game or use some strange Windows application, I could use Wine, although I generally search for Linux alternatives.

Because then I'd have to install Linux. Wine isn't 100 percent effective, and most of the world still uses windows. I do have a virtual machine that runs Ubuntu, though (pity the updater broke).

You have a lot to learn dude. There are plenty of native linux games and linux is much faster and more responsive than windows. The Compiz-Fusion graphics are much more sophisticated than Vista's and the run well on weak hardware. Most schoolwork, programming, webbrowsing, gaming, and everything else can be done on linux. I have never run into a problem.

I would like to add that since trying Linux, I have found Windows too restrictive and hard to use. I also strongly recommend switching to Linux. In general, I have had fewer problems in Linux than in Windows, and when problems do occur, they are almost always much easier to fix in Linux than in Windows.

Now for the question of what distro to use.

I do not like openSUSE and I'm trying to find time to switch to Gentoo (hey, I'm moving to a new laptop anyway). I have had problems with openSUSE, with the result that I'm still running openSUSE 10.2 and KDE 3.5.7, and that version of KMail seems buggy (I doubt the bugs would have carried over to KDE 4).

Gentoo is not for first-timers. As a general rule, don't try to compile a Linux kernel if you have never used Linux before.

I would personally recommend that you start with Kubuntu. TechWizrd, you have any better ideas?

In any case, I have avoided Windows when possible for a long time now, and I am never going back.

Well, for the general computer use, Linux Mint seems really good and I have been using it for a while. It has all the media codecs, a much better theme, and some nice new utilities like mintWifi. There is a GNOME, KDE, and XFCE version.
